With the U14s scheduled to play both Newport and the Blue Mountains in 2016, it was great to knock off one of these away games in the first round.
Oatley travelled to Lapstone Oval with 20 players and were confident of a positive result given the effort put in at training on Wednesdays and Sundays for the last 6 weeks.
Unfortunately all was not good in the BM's camp, they only had 9 x U14 players. Rather than forfeiting the game BM's decided to double up their U13s in order to fill a team, which was good news given the boys had travelled all that distance. It should be noted there are 5 x U13s and 1 x U12s playing for the Oatley U14s.
It quickly became apparent the BM's U13s that already had played in the heat of the day, were no match for the bigger and faster Oatley Boys.
In addition to the scrums being uncontested, Oatley started benching a lot of their bigger players, to make the game more of a contest. As the game moved into the second half Oatley pulled 3 more players from the field to even things up playing 12 vs 15 players. But at the end of the day BM's were up against it before they even ran on the field. Needless to say there were some gutsy performances from the BM's boys.
The final result was Oatley 60 to Blue Mountains 0
While some people could say this was a waste of time, it really gave Mark an opportunity to look at the Oatley boys in action, as we did not play a trial game before the season kick off. Needless to say there were a number of pleasant surprises.
